renommee & smartedit-5 review
I had a chance to check out the speed of the
new RenommeePLUS last week and it is FAST.
To have something to compare it to, I timed
several basic rendering effects against a
Prestige.... the results were amazing.
For the 1st test, I made 10 second
countdown. The Prestige took 27
seconds and the RenommeePLUS took 3 seconds
= 9 TIMES FASTER. For
the 2nd test, I did a 10 second
slow-motion @ 2x speed. The
Prestige took 52 seconds and the
RenommeePLUS took 10 seconds = over 5
TIMES FASTER. For the
3rd test, I did a 1 minute vertical
scroll. The Prestige took 3m33s
and the RenommeePLUS took 40s = almost
6 TIMES FASTER. So
basically the RenommeePlus is 5-9 times
faster than the Prestige and 10-15 times
faster than the Avio makes the Renommee or
RenommeePLUS an excellent upgrade. The
Renommee system can also use the same hard
drive sleds as the Prestige, so it's an easy
transition or addition :)
SmartEdit-5 is also really cool even if you
don't have high-def camera (i don't either).
There are 3 main reasons why I think the 5x
upgrade is a great purchase. The 1st
new feature is the ability to EXPORT
audio to CD (online
tutorial) from your audio/record screen.
I probably won't use this feature everyday,
but for those who do concerts, etc will be
able to sell an audio-only version of the
play and add to their bottom line. I
personally don't do this, but I already used
this feature in everyday use. Some of
my clients have the
Audio-FX software which allows you to
modify audio tracks and clean them up.
They charge clients to clean-up old
cassettes and make $$$. The 2nd new
feature is the MUSIC-2-BEAT (online
tutorial). This is SO EASY
to do. Just go to Audio Record/Edit
and highlight the song/track you want to cut
to the beat and then click Split. You
then just click the Play button and split
the song by clicking your mouse button to
the beat-of-the-music. When your
done, you go back to the main edit screen
and you will see black clips on the
storyboard with a musical not on them.
Then you highlight the 1st clip you want to
use down in the scene bin and click REPLACE.
This automatically trims the clip on the
scene bin to "match" the length you have
selected in the storyboard. This means
you can literally do a high-light film to
the beat of the music in about 10 minutes
for a 5 minute song. This is SO MUCH
FASTER than what it used to take. This
means no more finding the tempo/cadence and
trimming all those clips!! ... really
cool. Again, I don't do
music-2-the-beat every day, but even if I
use a few times in a year, you've saved tons
of time and probably paid for 5x with this
one feature. The 3rd new feature
is really an update to an old feature, but
it rocks. I'm talking about the
SMART-RENDERING. On the
old feature, if you were adding multiple
rendering items to the "render bin", it
would stop rendering the effect/scene it was
working on every time you added another
effect/scene. This is known as
first-in/last-out and wasted alot of render
time. The new smart-rendering is
first-in/first-out. This basically
means the 1st effect/scene you add to the
"render-bin" is being rendered in the
background regardless if you keep adding
effects/scenes to the "render-bin".
This means there is no wasted render-time
and makes this feature totally usable now.
Again... a huge time saver.
I have not had a chance to import hi-def
(don't have a camera :(, but I have talked
to several clients who have edited a hi-def
project and outputted to tape and they said
it looks amazing. All-in-all, I
am a firm believer in smartedit-5 and think
it would be a great addition to any
Casablanca machine.
3)
casablanca
renommee & gymnos
The Renommee
is the successor to our most successful
Casablanca ever, the Prestige.
You're already
aware that we have released (and already
shipped our first batch) of the Renommee
Plus. The Renommee is the little
sister to the Renommee Plus, a perfectly
positioned product for those whose
budget
The Renommee benefits from
essentially the same case as the
Prestige - with front and rear DV and
analog inputs, (although two-inches
deeper). But it is much faster! The
Renommee ships with an
Intel Pentium 4 processor running at 3.0
GHz with 512 MB of RAM and a 300
Gig HD in a removable sled.
The Renommee HD
sled is compatible with the Prestige and
the Renommee plus - customers can use
any existing Prestige drive/sleds in
their new Renommee once they install OS
Smart Edit 5 (included)
In using the
latest components, in comparison to the
Prestige, the Renommee really takes off
in terms of speed. It's almost five
times faster than a Prestige (see
Renommee review)!
For any of your customers who have
been considering a Prestige - the
Renommee is the ideal product to fit
that request! With the same MSRP and
the same Dealer Price, the customer is
the real winner, getting a much faster
Casablanca for the same price! Whether
a school, church, community access or
beginning professionals - the Renommee
is an ideal solution.
------------------------------------------------------------
Gymnos is
not a replacement for any of the current
or previous Casablanca models; instead
it is positioned in the mid-segment of
the Casablanca range.
Like the
Casablanca Renommee, the Gymnos is
keeping the tried & trusted Prestige
case design (with 2" additional depth),
including the removable hard-drive sled.
Of course, Gymnos is also shipped with
the latest Pioneer DVD burner too.
Gymnos features
the same mainboard as the Renommee (not
Renommee PLUS) and thus an Intel Pentium
4 processor at 3.0 gHz and with 512 MB
DDR- RAM memory. The hard-drive capacity
is 250 GB. The Gymnos is all digital, it
does not have any analogue video ins or
front inputs. To connect a monitor, the
VGA port is used.
On the software
side, Gymnos is shipped with SMART EDIT
5 but without Pro Pack functionality and
is therefore comparable with the
software specs of a Claro or Avio DVD.
Of course, Pro Pack can be ordered with
the Gymnos for only $199 at time of
hardware purchase or $299 at a later
date.
Gymnos is an ideal
solution for a customer who is using DV
or HDV cameras and wishes to edit
footage in a fast and efficient way.
A number of our most loyal customers
have expressed interest in using a
Gymnos as a fast, efficient HDV
rendering engine. They edit much of
their project on their Kron-Plus,
Prestige or Solitaire and firewire their
work in progress to the Gymnos for final
HDV Compilation... very clever!

4)
smart edit 5
pricing
Smart Edit 5 has been released in PAL but
is in testing here still in NTSC.In
addition to editing in either 720p or
1080i HDV, Casablanca editors running
Smart Edit 5 will, of course, be able to
select SD editing as well. And... (drum
roll please) customers can use the
Clipboard function in SE5 to bring SD
footage into an HDV project and Smart
Edit 5 will automatically upscale the
footage!
Additional benefits of SE5 include a
really cool ability to split music to
the beat. SE5 automatically places
these new split audio scenes in your SB
and then when you insert cover (B-roll)
footage for this audio, SE5
automatically trims the scene to fit
your audio (no, really!). Customers can
turn Smart Rendering to FIFO (First In,
First Out) or keep the current LIFO
(Last In, First Out) and these newly
generated scenes are placed adjacent to
the scene in the Scene Bin.
There is also the new ability to
export audio samples out to a CD-R/CR-RW
from the Casablanca DVD Drive and more
cool features that make the editing
experience on Casablanca more efficient.

Baby Kenzi & Family Photos!
Kenzi Grace blessed our family about
3-months ago. She is doing great, but
we think she might be allergic to dairy
(darn). Other than that, she's doin
great! You can enlarge the photo by
